Team-Based Design: Collaboration across Time and Space

چکیده

Rapid advances in mobile computing and wireless communication present an opportunity for fundamental changes in engineering education, particularly for teambased courses in which collaborative learning is the dominant learning mode. This talk describes a collaborative, multi-disciplinary design course and a suite of collaboration tools called Handy Andy, to support team based design. The current platform for Handy Andy is a Hewlett Packard Jornada handheld computer communicating via Lucent WaveLAN cards over Wireless Andrew. The results of some preliminary user testing with Handy Andy will be presented. Information Systems Development by US-Norwegian Virtual Teams: Implications of Time and Space

In this paper, we develop an understanding of how collaboration is possible among virtual team-members spread across the globe in time and space. We do so by interpretively examining communication patterns of virtual team-members located in the US & Norway, engaged in systems development projects for actual clients. A number of collaboration inhibitors are identified, along with strategies used...

Collaboration space division in collaborative product development based on a genetic algorithm

The advance in the global environment, rapidly changing markets, and information technology has created a new stage for design. In such an environment, one strategy for success is the Collaborative Product Development (CPD). Organizing people effectively is the goal of Collaborative Product Development, and it solves the problem with certain foreseeability. The development group activities are ...

Group-to-Group Distance Collaboration: Examining the "Space Between"

Organizations are moving towards a new type of work: group-to-group collaboration across distance, supported by technologies that connect rooms across distance into large collaboration spaces. In this study we report on distributed group-to-group collaboration in the domain of space mission design. We use the metaphor of the “space between” distant groups to describe the connections, interdepen...

Spaces, Traces and Networked Design

A field study was conducted on a team of collaborating designers who used a variety of internet-based media to co-ordinate their activities. The paper focuses on their work practices, specifically those of their conversational resources in organising collaboration and structuring their workspaces for future reuse. The team was interdisciplinary and both locally (office spaces spread over a sing...

Rethink space: (Re)designing a workspace using human-centered design to support flexibility, collaboration, and engagement among clinical and translational research support services

Introduction Space matters. We read space like we read people's faces. Space is an instrument of collaboration and innovation. At the University of Michigan's Institute for Clinical and Health Research (MICHR), a team was created to creatively and economically enhance our operating space into a flexible workspace that supports privacy, innovation, creativity, and most important, a culture of co...
